On Sunday, December 26, 2004, at 7:58 AM local time (00:58 UTC), an earthquake with a magnitude of 9.3 (according to USGS 9.1) occurred in the Indian Ocean, with the epicenter located 250 kilometers southsoutheast of Banda Aceh, Sumatra island, Indonesia. The earthquake and the resulting tsunami killed estimated 230,000 people in Indonesia (167,736), Sri Lanka (21,411), India (18,045), Thailand (8,212), Burma (ca. 400-600), Somalia (289), Maldives (108), Malaysia (75), Tanzania (13), Seychelles (3), Bangladesh (2), South Africa (2), Yemen (2) and Kenya (1). 125,000 people were injured, around 1.7 million lost their homes. The Boxing Day Earthquake belongs to the deadliest seismic events ever recorded.
