In the UEFA Euro 2012 group stage the teams in a group are firstly ranked by their points; they get 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss. The ranking is not always straight forward because of the use of head-to-head records in case of a tie on point between two or more teams. This can for instance lead to an outranking by a team with inferior goal difference of teams with a better one. Only the two best teams will advance to the next stage of the tournament; however it is still important to determine third place because of the prize money for this.
