The Black mark system was a system for Jagex to keep track of they way players behave in RuneScape. When players broke the Rules of Conduct, they were given a certain amount of black marks depending on the severity of the offence. For example, if a player broke Rule 1, that player generally received anywhere from 0.3 to 2 black marks. If a player were to break Rule 3, the player would receive many more black marks, possibly up to 5. If the player broke rule 7 or rule 12, the player generally received up to 9 black marks. More than 10 black marks warranted a permanent ban, while, under certain conditions, players could also be muted for breaking certain rules, such as Rule 1.
