As a child, Akleyn experienced the hardship of the first few years of the colony. As one of the first children born after its inception, he grew up knowing the trials of severe weather and food shortages that plagued the colony. He remembered living in a small one-room house, of his family working day and night to help construct buildings and sow crops.
