The Long Death was believed to be a lengthy, painful termination of one's life carried out by Honored Matres tribunals on Rikka's Planet during The Scattering. When Sheeana and Garimi of the no-ship, the Ithaca, led a fact-finding down to the surface of Rikka's planet during the advent of Kralizec, they came across a holo-recording of a trial from centuries before. In the "holo", they learned that a Matre commander, Rikka, had broken quaratine and brought back a described "deadly plague" to the world, infecting millions.
