The acceleration thruster was a type of thruster. These thrusters were used aboard starships to increase a ship's speed. These thrusters could be manually controlled by a person through thruster control. In 1986, as the HMS Bounty was attempting to reach breakaway speed for the slingshot effect, Spock activated these thrusters to give the ship that extra push. (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home)
