The humans were not supposed to wake up; however, in order to bring them to Soul Society they had to be turned into spirit beings(as the Soul Society is a spirit realm), like how Ichigo's group was before heading to the Soul Society to rescue Rukia. So most likely, nothing will happen to them, unless they encounter a Hollow.
