Curtilage originally meant the land and buildings enclosed by the walls of a castle. In later usage it referred to the barns, stables, garden plots and the like immediately proximate to a dwelling. It is understood in Fourth Amendment parlance to describe that area which “harbors those intimate activities associated with domestic life and the privacies of the home.”
