A passed ball is a catching mistake in which the catcher a mistake and fails to catch a pitch. This is distinct from a wild pitch in which the pitcher makes an errant throw. As with a wild pitch, this mistake allows any baserunners to advance so long as the catcher must spend time tracking down the missed catch and may allow a runner to score.
