Eugene Murphy (1889-1968) was a Labour Party politician active in the Deptford area. The son of Irish parents, Cornelius Murphy and Rachel Mary née Clark, he was born in Deptford. His father was a military hatter. He worked in the docks. In 1916 he married May Rebecca March in Greenwich. He became a member of Deptford Borough Council, and was Mayor of Deptford for two consecutive terms in 1947-49. He was also a member of the London County Council representing Deptford from 1955-61.
