The Master Chief was trapped in the rear half of the Forward Unto Dawn, which lacked slipspace abilities. This meant that he while he would live, he would not be able to return to Earth by himself. Knowing this, Cortana sets a signal for help, and the Master Chief goes into cryonic sleep, awaiting rescue.
