The Left Hand of Darkness was a science fiction novel by human author Ursula K. Le Guin, first published in 1969. Kieran Duffy read The Left Hand of Darkness as a child, and referenced the long journey depicted in the story after crawling for three hours through the crawlways of the USS Enterprise-D.
