Assiut (or Asyut) was an ancient Egyptian city, once a capital of the Upper Kingdom on the Nile River. In Greco-Roman times, the city was known as Lycopolis, for their worship of wolves. Near the site of the ancient city is the modern city of Asyut, which has a high percentage of Coptic Christians. Sometime prior to 1930, Theresa Lawrence explored a tomb in Assiut, where she fell into a pit of mummified wolves. She used her knickers to make a rope in order to climb out of the pit. In 1930, she related this story to Indiana Jones while the two were exploring the Temple of Old Uppsala.
