Robotnik's Space Satellite was created a short time after Dr. Robotnik's takeover as dictator as a part of his plan to transform the face of Mobius. When the satellite first fired, Sonic raced halfway around the planet to stop it, which he did by creating a giant mirror out of beach sand (by using his hyper-speed on it) and then using the mirror to reflect the beam back at the space satellite and destroy it.
