The condition is very uncommon. It usually occurs after an extremely stressful but non-traumatic event, such as the death of a close family member. It can also occur post-partum. However, in some case, it has no traceable cause. Once other conditions that cause psychosis are ruled out, treatment is to support the patient until they spontaneously recover.
