The asteroid belt was inhabited by a spaceborn race in the 24th century, as they fed on the kefnium, an ample food supply. The asteroid was uncharted to the United Federation of Planets until Stardate 44614 when the USS Enterprise-D was carrying one of the spaceborn beings as it fed on its energy. It approached the belt and three other of the beings came to retrieve it. (TNG: "Galaxy's Child" )
