He played junior hockey for the Nanaimo Clippers of the British Columbia Hockey League from 2005 to 2007. He then joined the Denver Pioneers of the NCAA where he was the captain. No NHL team drafted him. After finishing his final year at Denver Ostrow signed a try out contract in March, 2011, with the Portland Pirates of the American Hockey League. Later that year, in August, he signed a contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets of the NHL. He was assigned to the Express.
