Daughters and Sisters (sometimes shortened to D&S) is a secure shelter, located on Durham Avenue, for battered women that was founded by Jessica and Leonard Stevenson in 1974, and later run by their daughter Anna. Every June since 1986, the shelter has hosted an annual "Swing Into Summer" Picnic and Concert. In the Spring of 1994, Rose McClendon spent time at the shelter, and met Pamela Haverford, Robin St. James, Cynthia Smith, Gertrude Kinshaw, Consuelo Delgado and Dawn Verecker. There is a reference to Daughters and Sisters in Desperation.
