The WACO CG-4 was the primary military/cargo glider in service with the United States Army, issued to the Glider Infantry Regiments of the 82nd, 101st and 17th Airborne Divisions. These gliders, the American equivalent to the British Horsa Glider were used in almost every American airborne campaign in the ETO, from Operation: Neptune all the way to Operation: Varsity. With over 13,900 produced, the CG-4A's even outnumbered the infamous C-47 Skytrains. Made out of wood and canvas, they were light, but lacked proper armor and protection, requiring greater numbers to maintain their effectiveness as a whole. Towed in by transport aircraft before being detached, allowing the glider pilot autonomous control. One CG-4A could be towed by a C-47 at one time, while two can be towed by a C-53 Skytroo
