The Nile basin is the watershed of the Nile River and its tributaries. By the terms of a colonial era treaty rights to 80% of the water in the basin is reserved to Egypt and Sudan. In 2010 negotiations were underway which would establish a new treaty opening up the possibility of water development in the upper basin state, notably Ethiopia.
