António de Oliveira Salazar (28 April 1889 – 27 July 1970) served as the Prime Minister of Portugal from 1932 to 1968. In 1932, he founded and led the Estado Novo ("New State"), the authoritarian, right-wing government that presided over and controlled Portugal's social, economic, cultural and political life until 1974, outliving its founder by four years. From 1932 through 1968, Salazar held the office of Prime Minister of Portugal. He in addition, he held several cabinet positions at various times, and served as the interim president of Portugal in 1951.
