The letter Aleph is the first in the Hebrew alphabet. The word alphabet comes from the first two Hebrew letters aleph-bet. The letter looks similar to an X. It is silent. Only the vowel next to it is pronounced. (Traditional Hebrew does not show the vowels, but they are included to assist less fluent readers.)
