Maggot therapy is the use of disinfected fly maggots to consume and disinfect necrotic tissue. Early clinical evidence shows that it is more effective than existing alternative treatments. In 2004, they were approved by the FDA to treat bedsores, foot ulcers and other non-healing wounds of the skin and soft tissue. including those from trauma and surgery. Maggots cannot be used in oxygen poor or very dry environments.
