After briefing with Col. Rooks, in disguise, Heller infiltrates a Gentek facility, and discovers the purpose of "Phase One": experiments to extract the DNA of a Hydra, and inject living subjects with it. However, the moment Heller enters its holding area, the Hydra becomes agitated, breaks free, and begins to destroy the base. Heller takes it upon himself to destroy the creature. After a hearty battle, Heller manages to weaken it, then dives into the Hydra, consumes it, and is granted the ability to string together his biomass to ensnare enemies and vehicles.
