Its a simple matter of one (Duncan) having food and sunlight and the other (Ezekiel) not. It may have been how Ezekiel became like that. * How come only interns can die if nobody else can? * If Dawn can read auras and people in general, shouldn't she have known that Scott would be troublesome and untrustworthy to begin with?
