Several excavations at the Temple Mount have taken place. The British Royal Engineers began excavation in the 1870s. Since 1967, Israeli digs and maintenance work in the vicinity of the Mount have sparked demonstrations and criticism in the Muslim world, while Israel and Jewish groups have highlighted the deliberate and unsupervised removal of significant amounts of earth containing archaeological artifacts from the site.
