Chal'ykam was born and raised amongst the mighty wroshyr trees of Kashyyk. He grew up strong, with a steady hand and quick wits. He passed his trials, like all other Wookiees, and began to live the simple life of a hunter. For the most of his life, things were peaceful. The hunts were bountiful, and he lived with relative ease. However, that all changed one fateful day. A band of Trandoshan slavers attacked his village, enslaving the strong and culling the weak. In an effort to protect the children of the village, Chal'ykam attacked the Trandoshans, hoping to drive them away. This only resulted in a quick capture, much to the delight of the Trandoshan slavers. They forced him to watch his home, and his family, burn in the trees.
