Lower Austria (Niederösterreich) is one of the thirty-seven states or Reichsländer in Germany. The capital of Lower Austria (since 1886) is Wien. With a land area of 24,718 sq km and a population of 1.9 million people, it is the 12th-largest state in Germany, and in terms of population thirteenth.
