The Battle of Hattin, which took place on July 4, 1187, was an armed conflict between the armies of the Sultan Saladin and King Guy of Jerusalem. On the evening of July 3, scouts reported to Guy that Saladins troops were preparing to attack them when they marched towards Lake Tiberias. Guy, undaunted, ordered his troops to push on to the lake. That afternoon, as Saracen casualties mounted, Saladin was forced to retreat to safety. With the day won by the Christians, the Pope in Rome calls for a crusade.
