Finland has been a powerful country, affecting other places through conquests and trade for several centuries. The Finnish Empire, referring to the period in Finnish history 13th through 19th centuries, saw Finnish culture and language spread all the way to other continents than Colcarely-Laponia and Fennia. Today the Finnish-speaking population is known as fennophone. A total of 100 million people speak Finnish worldwide.
