Two (or more) characters, for whatever reason, must pretend they do not know each other over a long period of time. There are two obvious reasons for this to happen: 1. A spy mission or con game is in progress. If this is the first time some of these characters have appeared on the show, the audience might not be told that the characters know each other either.
