Syria is subdivided in a hierarchical manner to: * 14 Governorates (or G.) * 64 Districts The first 14 cities in the list, are governorate capitals (and capital cities of their districts at the same time). The following 50 towns are the remaining 50 regional capitals (administrative centres) of the districts. The next 18 towns are other significant towns. The last 14 items are the rural areas outside of the listed towns in each governorate. The Population figures are given according to the 2004 official census.
