Largely a conscript force, unlike the USA's more volunteer force, or at at least apart from exceptions when America needed more men during the KoreanWar and the Vietnam War (The US still technically has conscription, but it is so vestigial as to be nearly nonexistant), though much of western Europe kept up conscription programs, too.
