He played junior hockey for the Winnipeg Young Mens Lutheran Club and the Winnipeg Falcons, winning the Memorial Cup with the Falcons in 1921. Somers then went on to play senior hockey for the Winnipeg Victorias, Winnipeg Falcons, and the Fort William team. He turned pro with the Winnipeg Maroons in 1925-26. After several years in the minor pros, Somers made it to the NHL with the Chicago Black Hawks in 1929-30. He played two seasons for them and was traded to the New York Rangers in 1931 for Paul Thompson. He won the Stanley Cup with the Rangers in 1933.
