The Carneau originated in northern France and southern Belgium in Hainaut. Named Carneau, Carniau, Caniau or cainiau. The first Carneau standard was published by M. Robert Fontaine the 24 june 1891 in the revue "Chasse et Pêche". Once a free flying breed, living by fielding.
