The RG1680X features a mahogany body with a flame maple top bolted to a maple neck with a 24-fret rosewood fingerboard with offset dot position markers. Components include DiMarzio pickups, a locking nut and a double locking tremolo bridge with integrated L.R. Baggs active piezo pickup saddles for acoustic-like sound. Unlike previous piezo models like the RG2020X and RG2027X, the RG1680X features a two-band EQ for the piezo and has a 3-way toggle for selecting magnetic pickup only, piezo only or mixed output. The RG1680X was discontinued after 2002.
