Savage is notable as one of only five NHL players to score their first career goal on a penalty shot. Savage was a member of the Washington Capitals when he scored against Minnesota North Stars goaltender Jon Casey on November 18, 1992 at the Capital Centre in Landover, Maryland. He was drafted in the 1988 NHL Entry Draft by the Capitals 15th overall. But he never made it with the Capitals or the Quebec Nordiques. He played in 34 NHL games, scoring 5 goals and 7 assists. Savage played pro hockey until retiring in 2005.
