Archimedes' principle is a law that explains the phenomenon of buoyancy (floating), and also explains why objects seem to have less weight when under water. The principle states that: "Any object, wholly or partly immersed in a fluid, is buoyed up by a force equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the object." Archimedes' principle is named after Archimedes of Syracuse, who first discovered this law.
