Gaulin played junior hockey in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League from 1978 to 1982, scoring 50 goals each in 1980-81 and 1981-82. He also played for Canada at the 1981 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships. The Quebec Nordiques chose him 53rd overall in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft. Gaulin spent 5 seasons (1983-88) moving between the Nords and the minor leagues. He only got into 26 games, scoring 4 goals and 3 assists. Tired of the minor league grind, Gaulin moved to France in 1988. He spent nine seasons there and then retired in 1996.
