Jane Howell was on a plane piloted by Major Christopher "Kit" Walker, when it crashed into a lake in the jungles of Nairobi. The native, Baldayo, was killed in the crash, but gave Jane and Chris a magical powder that allowed them to walk away from the crash unharmed. They soon found a kingdom called Arohiti under the lake. The Arohitians believed her to be their lost 2,000-year-old princess, Kara. Jane was convinced to assume the identity of Kara, and swore to protect the peaceful kingdom against the evil Targala, who wished Kara for his bride. Walker became the captain of her guard.
