BSG Aufbau Südwest Leipzig was formed in Leipzig, Germany, as the successor club to Leipziger SC. They earned promotion to the East German 1. Liga after winning their Bezirksliga group in 1952-53. The club finished fourth in Group B of the 1. Liga in 1953-54. They were renamed ESG Wissenschaft DHfK Leipzig the following year, and won the Group B division. They remained in the 1. Liga as HSG Wissenschaft KMU (Karl Marx Universität) Leipzig until 1960. Leipzig then played in the third-tier 2. Liga and Gruppenliga from 1960-1969.
