Kathleen Winter was a writer for Sesame Park, the Canadian co-production of Sesame Street. Her first novel, Annabel, is nominated for the 2011 Orange Prize for Fiction, one of the United Kingdom's most prestigious literary prizes, awarded to an English-language female author from anywhere. The story is about a hermaphrodite born in the far northeast of Canada. Asked to come aboard by local segment producer Deborah Wells Smith, some of her segments included music by Terry Riley, with whom she collaborated.
