The tower block has been empty since 2008, and plans have been drawn to demolish Derwent Tower and 116 adjacent maisonettes, were approved in January 2009 by Gateshead Borough Council. The final nail in Derwent Tower's coffin came later in 2009 when English Heritage decided not to give the building listed building status. By late 2012, Derwent Tower had been demolished.
