Kaien was taken over by Metastacia, a Hollow that had just eaten his wife. Subsequently, Rukia stabbed him in this form. His Soul was then eaten by the Espada, along with Metastacia, Aaroniero Arruruerie and he was able to take Kaien's form and used his memories. He was subsequently killed by Rukia in this form once more.
