In 2268, the ship was under the command of Commander Kring. In that year, the cruiser picked up a distress call from the Federation mining colony on Angrena and Kring decided to set a course for the colony, but not to help the Humans, just acquire the tritanium being mined there. Unbeknown to Kring, the USS Enterprise had also responded to the distress call.
