A Pyrrhic Victory is a battle that one wins in war, but at such great losses that it spells eventual doom for the army and the nation. The best example of a Pyrrhic Victory is the Battle of Thermopylae, and I believe the term even comes from that particular exchange. Maybe you've seen the movie that got made about it?
