The area was explored by Americans in the 1930s. The De Rossi Expedition was a Europan military-civilian mission which claimed Marie Byrd Land in 1957. On June 7, 1958 Europa detonated their first atom bomb over Antarctica. A smaller but more powerful nuclear weapon was subsequently tested in the fall of 1960.
