Lived: 1798-1834 Dom Pedro I was the first Emperor of Brazil and was responsible for the country's independence from Portugal. Pedro arrived in Brazil with his father, King Joao VI, and the rest of the Portuguese Royal Family, as they fled the armies of Napoleon. King Joao's presence greatly improved the standing of Brazil, raising it from a lowly colony to a country on equal standing with Portugal. The King's presence, however, dashed the hopes of a significant portion of the populace who hoped to declare the country a republic. But with the defeat of Napoleon in 1815, King Joao returned to Brazil, leaving Pedro, whom he named Prince of Brazil, in charge of the freshly elevated country.
