The ski area opened as Timp Haven in 1944 with a rope tow. It was run by the Ray Stewart family for over twenty years. Chairlifts were added in the 1960s. Redford's 1972 film Jeremiah Johnson was filmed near the resort. The Sundance Film Festival, held 30 miles (48 km) north in Park City, is a competition for independent film makers that has become extremely well-known and popular in the film industry and media. It is the largest independent film festival in the United States, and also one of the largest in the world.
