In 1927 the scientist and Roman Catholic priest Georges LemaƮtre proposed what eventually became known as the Big Bang theory of the origin of the Universe, although he called it his "hypothesis of the primeval atom". The actual term "Big Bang" is credited to Fred Hoyle who first used it during a 1949 radio broadcast. Hoyle did not believe in the theory and used the phrase in order to ridicule the idea.
